New water well for Kaikan
A new well is expected to bring access to potable water to the community of Kaikan located in in Region 7, Cuyuni/Mazaruni. Guyana Water Incorporated said that a well is being drilled by way of a joint effort between GWI, the community and the Guyana Defence Force.
“This project is one of many which is geared towards achieving 100% access to potable water countrywide by 2025, as outlined in GWI’s five year Strategic plan. Baseline data from 2019 shows that 96 percent of the population has access to potable water,” a release from GWI said.
The well will allow the community which sits on the border with Venezuela to move from having 20 percent to 100 percent access to potable water. This project also caters for the upgrading of the existing water supply system in that community.
“The existing system, which serves 20 percent of the community, consists of the pumping of water from a nearby river, which is then stored using storage tanks on a trestle. The residents then access this water from stand pipes at strategic locations,” the Water Company said.
Other works will be conducted include pipe laying, upgrading of the storage facility, installation of a photovoltaic system and the installation of individual service connections. Recently, GWI’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Shaik Baksh along with Director of Hinterland Services, Mr. Ramchand Jailal and GDF Reserve Captain and GWI’s Customer Services Director, Mr. Marlon Daniels visited the community and met with residents to discuss the project to provide water supply improvement.
The Company said that a team from GWI visited the community to conduct resistivity logging in order to determine a viable location to drill a new well later this year.
