BREAKING: Ramjattan was under surveillance while serving as Security Minister, phone was wiretapped

Former Security Minister and APNU+AFC Prime Ministerial Candidate Khemraj Ramjattan

The mobile phone of Former Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan was ordered wire-tapped by the A Partnership for National Unity Government in the lead up to, during and after the general and Regional Elections March of this year.

Ramjattan who is also the leader of the Alliance For Change Political Party and Coalition’s Prime Ministerial Candidate was reportedly unaware that his calls were being monitored.

In fact, the official instructions to wiretap the then Security Minister’s Phone came down in the third week of April 2020.

Prior to that, Ramjattan’s movements, interactions and association with persons were all being monitored and according to the official document which ordered the wiretapping, all previous efforts proved to produce nothing of substance hence the decision to initiate wiretapping under the provisions of the constitution.

Ramjattan was not named in the official correspondent directing the police to initiate the wiretapping but his mobile number was listed.

The reason for the wiretapping and local surveillance of the then sitting security Minister was given as his involvement in armed robberies, trafficking in narcotics and purchasing of firearms and ammunition without being the holder of a license.

Contacted Friday evening, Alliance for Change Leader and Former Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan said that he was totally unaware that his phone was being tapped and he that he was being monitored. He said the police never informed him of such an operation.

The Former Security Minister added that he was very confident that the Commissioner of Police at the time and all the Deputy Commissioners of Police were familiar with his number and would have known that once they see that number listed as a number to tap, they ought not to have done so
