A property affected by excess water on the land

The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has been activated as unprecedented rainfall led to flooding in many parts of the capital city, Georgetown and parts of the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara.

The Civil Defence Commission said NECO was activated as it conducted assessments in the city which included wards like East and West Ruimveldt, Alexander Village, Stabroek, Charlestown,Albouystown and Wortmanville and several villages along the East Coast and East Bank corridors.

Residents and businesses alike suffered as heavy continuous rainfall led to flooding which was compounded by above-normal high tides.

It was due to those tides that several sluices and kokers remained closed as the authorities depended on several pumps.

The CDC said that due to its assessment it has “procured sand and sandbags to assist residents” who are at further risk. It said too has assisted in sanitation of homes affected by flood waters.

The heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected until November 10th.

With that in mind the CDC continues to  urge residents of riverain, low-lying and flood prone areas to take all necessary precautions and to contact the National Emergency Monitoring System (NEMS) on 226-1114,623-1700 and 600-7500, should they be affected.
