A 31-year-old welder has been remanded to prison on murder charges following the deaths of his reputed wife, Donette Albert, 29, and their three-year-old son, Keron Latchman, in a fire that destroyed their Charity, Essequibo Coast home.
The accused, Mahindra Latchman appeared in court on Thursday, October 22, in connection with the deaths, which occurred on Monday, October 19, when the family’s one-storey wooden house was engulfed in flames.
The deadly fire reportedly followed an argument between the accused and Albert earlier that day.
According to the accused’s account, he went downstairs and, at about 7:20 a.m., discovered that the house was on fire. He claimed that he attempted to rescue Albert and the child but was unable to reach them because of the intense heat.
Firefighters who responded to the scene eventually extinguished the blaze, but the charred bodies of Albert and little Keron were discovered inside the building.
Their remains were subsequently taken to the Suddie Hospital Mortuary.
Albert’s partner was taken into custody following the tragedy and was later charged in connection with the deaths.
The mother and her young son were laid to rest at Mabaruma.
