Opposition Leader wants rape-accused Karimbaksh gone, debunks claim of ‘friendship’

October 19, 2026
Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition Azruddin Mohamed on Monday evening said that rape-accused Deputy Commissioner of Police Fizal Karimbaksh should be sent home amidst grave allegations of rape and death threats which were reported against him by a female police inspector.

Mohamed was at the time speaking during a telephone interview with BIG Smith News Watch on Monday evening.
“Fizal Karimbaksh, as a Muslim, must do the right thing and leave office immediately. It’s grave allegations of rape, and the police force Deputy Commissioner is holding a high office, SOCU. Karimbaksh should leave immediately. I am calling on the president, just as how the president appointed Karimbaksh, I want the president to disappoint him, get him out from there,” Opposition Leader Mohamed told BIG Smith News Watch on the phone.
Wednesday, October 21, 2026, will mark exactly 31 days since the rape victim approached Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond and related her story even as she clutched her young baby in her arms. It was at the minister’s office that the woman detailed two encounters of rape and death threats which were leveled against her.
“Karimbaksh should not be sitting there; what example are we setting for fellow Guyanese, and what message are we sending to women in this country who are going through the same situation with abuse and rape? What example are we really setting?” the Leader of the Opposition questioned.
Since the visit to the minister’s office and the subsequent official report made with the police, there have been calls and campaigns for Karimbaksh to proceed on leave to allow for an investigation into the matter. However, those calls have been ignored, coupled with cosmetic actions by the Guyana Police Force, including falsely informing the nation that the embattled officer was sent on leave, only for the country to learn that the following day, karimbaksh showed up for work.
Asked about the public view that his almost month-long silence is due to a friendship that he shares with the rape accused, Mohamed said that is not true.
“No sir, I don’t share any sort of relationship with Karimbaksh. Karimbaksh sent staff from his office to search my place, as you can recall, and they sent sniffer dogs here when I had to rush down to Mohameds Enterprise. Karimbaksh’s office still has money there for me; I think it’s two million, and I need my money…Karimbaksh needs to go,”– Mohamed asserted.
According to the Opposition Leader, Karimbaksh needs to be sent on administrative leave, and the onus is on the president to ensure this happens pending the investigation.
