Government moves to strengthen Guyana’s poultry industry

The Government is stepping up efforts to strengthen Guyana’s poultry industry, with a focus on improving production capacity, storage infrastructure and long-term market stability.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha on Monday met with representatives of the Private Sector Commission (PSC) to discuss developments in the sector and measures aimed at building a stronger and more resilient poultry industry.
Mustapha said Government is working with industry stakeholders to address current supply challenges while putting measures in place to support local producers and improve the sector’s ability to respond to changes in demand.
As part of the short-term response, arrangements have been made for the temporary importation of approximately 330,000 pounds of chicken per week to supplement local production.
The imports are being facilitated by the New Guyana Marketing Corporation and will be distributed through local suppliers and distributors. The measure is intended to address temporary supply gaps while local production strengthens.
Beyond the immediate intervention, Mustapha highlighted plans to expand storage and cold-storage capacity within the poultry sector.
He said greater storage capacity would allow producers to preserve poultry during periods of high production and release supplies when demand increases, reducing fluctuations and creating greater predictability for both producers and consumers.
The Government is also continuing to monitor production, supply and demand while engaging producers, importers, distributors and other private-sector stakeholders.
Mustapha said the overall objective is to create the conditions for local poultry production to expand, become more resilient and meet the needs of the domestic market.
The engagement with the PSC forms part of Government’s broader efforts to strengthen agricultural value chains, support local production and advance food security.
