Gov’t to introduce new laws to target noise, indecent music, improper garbage disposal

The government is preparing to introduce a wide-ranging package of legislative reforms aimed at tackling public nuisance, strengthening regulatory enforcement and modernising Guyana’s legal framework.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Mohabir Anil Nandlall, announced during his weekly podcast ‘Issues in the News’ that the proposed legislation will address long-standing concerns, including noise nuisance, indecent and vulgar music, littering and the improper disposal of large volumes of garbage.

The Attorney General said the measures are intended to improve public order while updating laws to better reflect the country’s changing social and economic landscape.

In addition to the public order reforms, Nandlall disclosed that the government is reviewing Guyana’s occupational health and safety laws, describing the existing legislation as outdated and inadequate for today’s rapidly expanding economy.

He noted that the country’s decades-old health and safety regulations have failed to keep pace with major developments, particularly in the construction and oil and gas industries, where larger and more complex projects require stronger legal safeguards.

According to Nandlall, Minister of Labour and Manpower Planning Keoma Griffith will lead the initiative, with support from the Attorney General’s Chambers and the Parliamentary Drafting Division.

Once completed, the legislative package is expected to strengthen workplace safety standards and provide a more modern legal framework to govern Guyana’s evolving economy.
