Six new Puisne Judges were sworn in on Wednesday by President Dr Irfaan Ali following their appointment by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The new judges are Sueanna Lovell, former Registrar of the Supreme Court; Mandisa Breedy, Attorney-at-Law; Christel Lambert-Meertins, former Commissioner of Title; Renita Camille Singh, former Commissioner of Title; Sunil Scarce, former Senior Magistrate; and Azeena Baksh, former Registrar of Deeds.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the President’s office on Shiv Chanderpaul Drive.

Addressing the new appointees, President Ali said the appointments reflect a deliberate effort to strengthen the judiciary and improve its capacity to serve an increasingly rights-conscious society.

He reminded the judges that while the executive facilitates their appointments, the independence of the judiciary must remain paramount, urging them to uphold the rule of law with integrity, fairness and impartiality.

The President also encouraged the judges to tackle the court backlog with urgency, noting that the timely disposal of cases is critical to maintaining public confidence in the justice system.

Puisne Judges serve in the High Court of Guyana, where they preside over civil, criminal and commercial matters. Under Article 128(1) of the Constitution, they are appointed by the President acting on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission.
