Land secured for construction of Upper Mazaruni hospital

June 2 2026
Plans for a modern hospital in the Upper Mazaruni have moved a significant step forward after the government secured the land required for the project.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced on Monday that approval has been granted for the use of 10 acres of land, clearing the way for construction of the long-awaited healthcare facility in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
The land was made available following approval from Kamarang/Warawatta Toshao Alma Marshall, ending delays that had stalled progress on the project.
The President had previously raised concerns about the time being taken to identify and approve a suitable site, noting that residents of the Upper Mazaruni have long awaited improved healthcare services closer to their communities.
Once completed, the state-of-the-art hospital is expected to serve residents across the Upper Mazaruni, providing access to enhanced medical care and reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for specialised treatment.
The project forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in hinterland and remote communities.
President Ali also commended the cooperation between community leaders and the government that helped bring the project closer to fruition, describing it as an important investment in the future development and wellbeing of the region.
