Slain tour guide to be finally laid to rest

More than four months after his charred remains were discovered inside a burnt vehicle in the South Rupununi, murdered tour guide Leon “Rasta” Baird is expected to be laid to rest on Friday.

A relative confirmed that Baird’s funeral service will take place on May 15 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church.

The family had delayed funeral arrangements as they sought a second post-mortem examination by a Trinidadian pathologist. However, the application for the overseas expert to conduct the examination was rejected by the Medical Council of Guyana.

Government pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh had previously concluded that Baird died as a result of burns.

Baird, who worked at Wichabai Ranch in the South Rupununi, was last seen alive on January 23. His burnt body was discovered three days later inside a torched company vehicle.

Following investigations, Ken Faria, a Community Development Officer from Central Rupununi, was charged with Baird’s murder.
