21-Y-O in custody as police investigate fatal Edinburgh crash

May 12 2026
What was initially reported as an accident is now under deeper scrutiny following the arrest of a 21-year-old contractor as investigations continue into the death of 42-year-old Oswin Lawson along the Edinburgh Public Road, East Bank Berbice.
Lawson, of Lot 46 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, was discovered in the early hours of Tuesday, May 12, 2026, after the motor car he was driving, HD 8644, ended up submerged in a canal on the eastern side of the roadway.
Initial reports indicated that Lawson was travelling south along the eastern drive lane at approximately 01:30 hrs when the vehicle reportedly veered out of control, struck a stand on the eastern grass parapet, and plunged into the canal.
It was speculated that the vehicle may have been travelling at a fast rate at the time, and that Lawson allegedly fell asleep while driving, leading to the loss of control.
His body reportedly sustained several injuries during the incident.
Public-spirited citizens managed to remove him from the wreckage in an unconscious state and rushed him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.
However, the matter has since taken a significant turn, with authorities confirming the arrest of a 21-year-old contractor as part of ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Details surrounding the arrest have not yet been disclosed.
Lawson’s body remains at a funeral home pending a post-mortem examination to determine his exact cause of death.
