Heart-related deaths increasing among young Guyanese- Cardiologist

Cardiologist Mahendra Carpen is urging Guyanese to pay closer attention to their heart health amid what he describes as a troubling increase in sudden cardiac deaths among young adults.

In a public statement on his social media on May 5 2026, Dr. Carpen said there has been a devastating rise in cases involving people in their 20s to 40s dying unexpectedly, often during sleep or while carrying out routine daily activities.

According to the cardiologist, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of these sudden deaths. He explained that sudden cardiac death occurs when the heart experiences an electrical malfunction, triggering an abnormal rhythm that can rapidly become fatal.

Dr. Carpen noted that blocked arteries remain the most common underlying cause, but warned that other serious conditions—including inflammation or infection of the heart muscle, uncontrolled hypertension, enlarged or stiffened heart muscles, and inherited heart disorders—can also contribute.

He further highlighted a growing trend in Guyana where younger individuals are developing severe heart disease linked to uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and infections affecting the heart.

The cardiologist urged persons to be alert to symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, lightheadedness, and unexplained fatigue. He said even subtle declines in physical stamina or daily functioning should not be ignored.

Dr. Carpen stressed the importance of early medical screening and regular health check-ups, emphasizing that early detection remains critical in preventing serious cardiac complications and sudden death.
