$3B cash support for rice farmers – Pres. Ali

April 30 2026
President Irfaan Ali has announced a $3 billion financial support package for rice farmers across Guyana, as the sector faces mounting global challenges.
The announcement was made on Thursday, during a consultative meeting with hundreds of farmers at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.
Under the initiative, farmers will receive direct cash transfers based on the size of their cultivation. Those farming 50 acres or less will receive $15,000 per acre, while farmers with more than 50 acres will receive $10,000 per acre.
President Ali stressed that the assistance is targeted at active farmers and not absentee landowners, noting that the aim is to support those directly involved in production.
He described the rice industry as a critical pillar of Guyana’s agricultural sector and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening what he called the “backbone of the industry.”
The Head of State also highlighted efforts to diversify the sector, encouraging the integration of high-value crops and livestock to improve resilience and boost farmers’ incomes. He said the Government is pursuing a holistic approach that includes enhancing profitability and continuing investments in key infrastructure.
President Ali pointed to ongoing global pressures affecting the industry, including rising input costs, shipping challenges, and geopolitical instability.
He also reminded farmers of previous Government interventions, including tax and fee reductions, fertilizer distribution, flood relief support, and subsidies during periods of low paddy prices.
According to the President, the latest financial injection forms part of a continued effort by the administration to cushion the impact of external shocks and sustain growth in the rice industry.
