Sanitary facilities vandalized at new Guyana-China Friendship Park

Authorities have raised alarm over acts of vandalism and misuse targeting sanitary facilities at the recently commissioned Guyana-China Friendship Park on the WCD.

The Protected Areas Commission (PAC) says routine maintenance inspections uncovered deliberate damage, including severe clogging of the sewerage system with large amounts of industrial-grade tissue.

In one particularly troubling incident, a fish was reportedly found inside a toilet bowl.

According to the PAC, such actions pose serious risks to the park’s plumbing infrastructure and may result in temporary closures of facilities to facilitate urgent repairs, inconveniencing visitors.

The Commission has warned that the park is under 24-hour CCTV surveillance and that footage will be used to identify those responsible. It stressed a zero-tolerance stance on the destruction of public property, noting that individuals found engaging in vandalism will face legal consequences.

While reaffirming its commitment to maintaining clean and functional public spaces, the PAC emphasised that the long-term sustainability of the park depends on the cooperation of its users.

Visitors are being urged to dispose of waste properly, use sanitary facilities as intended, and report any suspicious activity to on-site security personnel.

The park, envisioned as a recreational hub for families, fitness enthusiasts and tourists, is being positioned as a symbol of national pride—one authorities say must be protected through collective responsibility.
