Attorney General Anil Nandlall on Thursday rejected an unusual attempt by Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed to settle a $1 million court-ordered payment using two wheelbarrows of cash, describing the move as a “little circus” and a “attempt at ridicule.”

Speaking during a live broadcast, Nandlall said Mohamed arrived at his chambers on Carmichael Street, Georgetown, accompanied by his sister Hana Mohamed and We Invest in Nationhood MP Odessa Primus, claiming he was there to pay costs owed to the Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs.

The payment stems from a February 4 ruling by Acting Chief Justice Navindra Singh, who dismissed a legal challenge filed by the Mohameds and awarded $500,000 in costs to the Attorney General, $500,000 to Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond, and the same amount to the Acting Chief Magistrate. The payments were due by February 27.

Nandlall said that after the deadline passed without payment, he wrote to the Mohameds’ attorneys requesting the $1 million owed to himself and the Minister, while cautioning on his “Issues in the News” platform that enforcement action would be taken.

He also disclosed that he received what he described as an “infantile and purile” letter from one of Mohamed’s attorneys on Wednesday, to which he responded.

According to the Attorney General, Mohamed’s attempted payment included one wheelbarrow filled with small-denomination bills, including $20s and $100s, while the other contained a large volume of coins.

However, Nandlall noted that laws in Guyana govern how coins and notes can be used to settle debts, indicating that the coins would not be accepted.

“Unfortunately for Mr Mohamed, he will have to return the barrow of coins that he has brought,” he said.

The Attorney General criticised the act as an attempt to undermine the court, stating it was a “little circus” and a “attempt at ridicule” that has backfired.

He maintained that court orders must be honoured and said his actions were aimed solely at ensuring compliance.

Nandlall further accused Mohamed of attempting to mock the justice system and showing “utter disrespect,” adding that the Opposition Leader lacks the maturity required for high office.

“Azruddin Mohamed is a child in a big man’s body,” the Attorney General said, while also asserting that Mohamed does not understand his role and was attempting to embarrass the government.

“And he has his sister who doesn’t know better and thats demonstrably clear, videoing it live,” Nandlall added.

“I hope their father is proud of this display on the eve of Eid.”

He warned that those who seek to ridicule the courts and disregard the rule of law are free to do so “at their own peril.”
