A tragic accident at Orangestein, East Bank Essequibo, on Friday claimed the lives of a young motorcyclist and a four-month-old infant, while a teenage woman was injured.
Dead are Krishna Persaud, 22, of Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, and four-month-old Luke Persaud, who were both occupants of a motorcycle involved in the collision.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 11:00 hrs along the Orangestein Public Road and involved motor lorry GZZ 5068, driven by a 27-year-old man of Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara, and motorcycle CM 5492.
Reports indicate that the lorry was exiting a shopping mall parking lot onto the roadway when the motorcycle, which was travelling along the southern side of the road, reportedly attempted to overtake another stationary lorry. During the manoeuvre, the motorcycle crossed onto the opposite side of the road and collided with the front right portion of the lorry.
The impact caused the motorcyclist and two pillion riders to be thrown onto the roadway. They were picked up in an unconscious condition and rushed to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital.
Krishna Persaud and the infant were pronounced dead on arrival by medical personnel.
A 19-year-old female passenger later regained consciousness and was admitted to the hospital’s female surgical ward with head and other injuries. Her condition has been listed as stable.
The bodies of the deceased have since been taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home, where they are awaiting post-mortem examinations.
Authorities have obtained CCTV footage from the area as part of ongoing efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
