Police are investigating two fatal road accidents that occurred on Saturday night along the East Coast Demerara (ECD) and East Bank Essequibo (EBE) public roads.
In the first incident, a 34-year-old Venezuelan construction worker lost his life in a collision with a motor car on Enmore Public Road.
Police said the accident occurred at about 23:50 hrs and involved motor car PAN 5007 driven by a 25-year-old man of Blossom Scheme, Enmore, and an electric cycle ridden by Carlos Eliber of Mon Repos, ECD.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the car was proceeding west along the southern driving lane of Enmore Public Road when the electric cycle reportedly crossed the roadway from north to south and into the path of the vehicle.
The driver told investigators that he swerved south and applied brakes in an attempt to avoid a collision, but the right-front portion of the car struck the electric cycle.
As a result of the impact, Eliber was flung into the air and landed on the roadway, sustaining severe injuries. Emergency Medical Technicians responded to the scene and he was later examined by a doctor attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, who pronounced him dead.
His body has since been taken to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Police said a breathalyser test conducted on the driver recorded readings of 35 and 39 micrograms of alcohol. He is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
Meanwhile, another accident earlier that evening claimed the life of a 55-year-old man along Greenwich Park Public Road, East Bank Essequibo.
Dead is Deryck Singh of St Lawrence, East Bank Essequibo, who was driving motor car PXX 9053 at the time of the accident, which occurred around 21:10 hrs.
The collision also involved two motor lorries — GAB 5416 driven by a 31-year-old man of Leonora, West Coast Demerara, and GAF 6756 driven by a 21-year-old man of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara.
According to police, the two lorries were travelling east along the northern side of the roadway when Singh’s car, which was reportedly travelling west in the centre of the road between both lanes, swerved north into the path of lorry GAB 5416.
The car collided with the right-side rear wheel of the lorry, causing the vehicle to lose control and end up on the southern lane facing west.
The second lorry, which was also travelling east along the northern side of the road, reportedly swerved onto the southern lane in an attempt to avoid the crash but collided head-on with the car.
Singh became pinned inside the vehicle with multiple injuries. He was pulled from the wreckage by public-spirited citizens in an unconscious state and rushed to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body is currently at the Ezekiel Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said a breathalyser test conducted on the driver of lorry GAB 5416 recorded readings of 071 and 072 micrograms of alcohol, while the driver of lorry GAF 6756 recorded 05 micrograms.
Both drivers remain in police custody as investigations continue. The vehicles involved have also been lodged pending examination.
