Moore, DeSantos perform on first day of ‘Nationals’

On the first day of the 2026 National Schools’ Championships at the National Track and Field Centre in Leonora, Akroy DeSantos from Zeeburg Secondary made a remarkable impression.

 

Following a vibrant opening ceremony, DeSantos showcased his talent by dominating the boys’ under-14 1500 metres final, clocking an impressive 4:44.98 seconds. Lovell Bernard from Sand Creek Secondary and Edenan Hercules of Dolphin Secondary secured the silver and bronze medals, finishing with times of 4:51.35 seconds and 4:52.42 seconds, respectively.

 

In the girls’ under-14 discus throw, Shanea Moore from Charlestown Secondary captured gold with a throw of 24.56 metres. Silver went to Acacia Ogle of McKenzie High, who threw 22.75 metres, while Imani Hawker of President’s College took bronze with a distance of 21.26 metres.

 

In the boys’ under-20 100 metres, Onesi Dunn from Chase Academic Foundation clinched gold in 10.58 seconds, edging out Ezek Willington from Mahaicony Secondary, who finished in 10.61 seconds for silver.

 

Gordon Thompson from McKenzie High secured bronze with a time of 10.62 seconds.

 

Meanwhile, Nyoscie Wright of New Amsterdam Multilateral triumphed in the girls’ under-20 100 metres with a time of 12.74 seconds, followed by Leanna Fraser of MTVTC and Malia Primo of North Georgetown, who finished with times of 13.30 seconds and 13.79 seconds, respectively.

 

Other notable results included Areanna Bart of Stewartville Secondary winning the girls’ under-14 1500 metres in 5:32.25 seconds, Ebo McNeil of McKenzie High taking the boys’ under-20 1500 metres in 4:17.36 seconds, and Adanya Glen winning the girls’ under-20 1500 metres in 5:11.12 seconds. Omari Welch of Corentyne Secondary and Angel Jeffery of Christianburg also excelled, winning the boys’ under-16 and girls’ under-16 100 metres, respectively.

 

The championship events will proceed on Thursday, featuring the male and female 200 and 800 metres.
