The Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, on Monday convened a high-level meeting to examine plans for the development and modernization of several markets across the country.

The discussions form part of the Government’s broader efforts to strengthen local economic activity and improve community spaces.

Among the markets reviewed were those in Buxton, Plaisance, Zeelugt and Tuschen, which serve as important commercial hubs for vendors, farmers and small business operators.

According to the ministry, the meeting explored options for transforming these markets to better serve vendors and customers. Proposed improvements include upgraded infrastructure, enhanced sanitation facilities, improved vendor stalls, better drainage systems and more organized layouts aimed at creating safer and more efficient operations.

Officials also examined possible improvements to the markets in New Amsterdam and Skeldon, both of which play a significant role in supporting economic activity within their respective regions. Proposals discussed focused on modernizing facilities while maintaining the markets’ importance as central points of commerce.

The meeting further considered the development potential of the market area at Soesdyke Junction, a key transportation link connecting the coastland to the hinterland. Given the high volume of daily traffic in the area, discussions included the possibility of establishing a structured market environment to safely accommodate vendors while improving conditions for commuters and travelers.

In addition, officials examined the concept of developing a designated highway rest stop along the corridor. Such a facility could provide travelers with a safe and convenient place to pause during long journeys while creating new economic opportunities for vendors and small businesses.

Minister Manickchand noted that the Government intends to engage key stakeholders throughout the planning process to ensure the developments reflect the needs of the communities they serve.

The ministry said consultations will continue with vendors, local authorities and community representatives before final decisions are made regarding the design and development of the proposed locations.
