Action between UG (green) and Essequibo over the weekend.

The first-ever MODEC Tertiary Education Football Tournament has set the stage for an exhilarating semi-final round after an action-packed weekend of quarter-final matches. Essequibo Technical Institute (ETI) and Mahaicony Technical Institute (MTI) stood out as the weekend’s champions, advancing alongside New Amsterdam and Upper Corentyne.

The drama unfolded at the Queen’s College Ground, where Mahaicony engineered a stunning turnaround against Linden Technical Institute (LTI). Despite LTI initially taking control with a goal from Dexter Milo in the 16th minute, Mahaicony struck back rapidly with two goals in quick succession from Omar Williams and Yohance Francis, sealing a 2-1 win.

Essequibo also showed their strength, decisively eliminating the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen Campus with a 2-0 victory, thanks to contributions from Jamaal Smith and Deangelo Davidson.

New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) delivered a surprising performance, defeating the Government Technical Institute (GTI) 3-1, led by Amare Caesar’s impressive brace. Upper Corentyne made their mark as well, easily overpowering Port Mourant Technical Centre with a commanding 3-0 scoreline, highlighted by Matthew Doris’s two second-half goals.

With semi-finals scheduled for March 5 and the final on March 8, the tournament promises exciting competition, with substantial cash prizes awaiting the top teams.
