Over 6,500 drivers caught using illegal third lane

January 27, 2026 — The Guyana Police Force has recorded more than 6,500 illegal third lane violations along monitored roadways, using footage captured by the Safe Road Intelligent System (SRIS).

An illegal third lane violation occurs when a motorist unlawfully uses the shoulder or outer edge of a roadway as an additional driving lane, outside of what is legally designated for traffic.

Police say the practice poses serious safety risks, disrupts traffic flow, and significantly increases the likelihood of preventable collisions.

According to police, these offences are not ticketable and must be prosecuted before a magistrate.

Each violation recorded by SRIS cameras is individually reviewed by trained police personnel, with the evidence analysed, compiled, and formally presented to the court.

To date, 585 cases have already been heard and processed, resulting in fines and, in some instances, the suspension of drivers’ licences. The remaining cases are at various stages of review and prosecution.

The Guyana Police Force said it is strengthening its prosecutorial capacity to ensure faster preparation and processing of SRIS-related matters, as enforcement efforts continue to expand nationwide.

When motorists are identified, police officers use electronic tablets to show drivers the recorded footage of the offence as part of the charge preparation and verification process ahead of court proceedings.

The police have again urged motorists to obey traffic laws and to desist from the unlawful use of roadway shoulders and outer lanes.

The SRIS, authorities say, remains a critical tool in national efforts to improve road safety, strengthen accountability, and reduce traffic-related incidents across Guyana.
