Minister Manickchand orders immediate action over city sanitation

January 18, 2025 — Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, on Saturday met with the Mayor, councillors and the Chief Sanitation Officer of the City of Georgetown, where she expressed deep concern, disappointment and consternation over the current condition of the capital.
During the meeting, the minister described the state of the city as wholly unacceptable, emphasising that sanitation services, solid waste disposal and garbage collection must be reliable, predictable and effective.
She warned that the failure to deliver these basic services denies residents and visitors their rightful entitlement to a clean, safe and habitable city.
Minister Manickchand has requested that a comprehensive plan outlining concrete and effective measures for improvement be submitted to her by 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
She also assured that the public will be kept informed as developments unfold
