235 Fire hydrants inoperable in Georgetown

The Guyana Fire Service has found 235 fire hydrants across the city to be inoperable, following an inspection conducted on Wednesday. According to a statement from the agency, the GFS on direction from President Irfaan Ali, has taken over the responsibility for the inspection, maintenance and operation of all fire hydrants across Georgetown; this was previously the responsibility of the Guyana Water Inc.

Citizens have often raised concerns that hydrants in the city are inoperable at times of major fires leading to significant destruction and even loss of lives. The GFS in a statement said a total of 356 fire hydrants were inspected by officials including Chief Fire Officer, Kalamadeen Edoo and Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Anand Persaud.

It was found that 121 hydrants are fully functional but are in need of maintenance such as painting. Of the hydrants which are inoperable, 182 require minor repairs and while 53 require major repairs.

The GFS said “fire hydrants play a vital role in saving lives and property in the event of a fire,” and is urging members of the public to do their part to ensure these hydrants remain operable and accessible at all times.

Citizens are also urged to ensure fire hydrants are protected and to report incidents of vandalism to the Police or the Fire Service.
