DECEMBER 31 2025

28-Y-O Trevaughn James was today charged and remanded to prison for the murder of his 75-year-old grandfather, Athlone Goring, who was killed on Friday, December 26, at Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara.

James, also known as “Trevy,” a Guyanese male of African descent and a joiner by profession, of Lot 90 Stanleytown, was arrested and charged with the offence of murder.

The charge alleges that he unlawfully killed Athlone Goring, a Guyanese pensioner of African descent, also of Lot 90 Stanleytown.

The accused appeared at the Wales Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Weaver, where the charge was read to him.

He was not required to plead and was subsequently remanded to prison.

The matter was adjourned to January 23, 2026, for the submission of statements.

Background

Goring, an overseas-based pensioner, was found brutally stabbed to death in the upper flat of his Stanleytown home on December 26, shortly after returning to Guyana.

Police investigations initially revealed that two of his grandchildren—a 22-year-old granddaughter and 20-year-old grandson—were prime suspects in the killing.

Both suspects, who reside in the lower flat of the same building, were taken into police custody shortly after the discovery. Investigators reported that there were no signs of forced entry to the victim’s apartment, raising suspicion about individuals with direct access to the premises.

Detectives also uncovered additional evidence believed to implicate one of the grandchildren, including an injury observed on a suspect’s hand.

According to information received by BIG Smith News Watch, the grandchildren told investigators that they went upstairs to check on their grandfather after hearing unusual noises and allegedly found him lying on the floor, bleeding profusely.

Goring was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
