Hope Estate Resident Gets 12yrs for Fatally Beating Best Friend

A drinking session between two lifelong friends turned deadly in 2021, and now a 51-year-old Hope Estate man will spend the next several years behind bars for his role in the tragedy.

Justice Priscilla Chandra-Hanif recently sentenced Sahadeo Persaud, known as “Robin,” to 12 years’ imprisonment for the killing of his best friend and relative, 33-year-old Pradesh Ramgobin, also called Avinash.

The sentence will be reduced by the time he has already spent on remand. State Counsel Darin Chan prosecuted the case.

Persaud had originally faced a murder charge but opted to plead guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter.

The court heard that on the night of September 21, 2021, Persaud and Ramgobin were drinking together at Persaud’s home when an argument spiraled out of control.

In the heat of the quarrel, Persaud struck Ramgobin multiple times with a glass bottle, mainly to the head.

Instead of seeking help immediately, Persaud cleaned the scene, wrapped his injured friend’s head in a jersey, and left him on a bed.

When he checked the following morning, Ramgobin was unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead at the CC Nicholson Hospital.

A post-mortem confirmed that Ramgobin died from cerebral haemorrhage due to blunt force trauma.

Police charged Persaud days later, and after almost four years on remand, he admitted guilt.
