Ali to address nation on 5-year economic/ social policy agenda plan

August 24, 2025

Head of State, President Irfaan Ali, has confirmed the arrival of deployed United States military assets to the southern Caribbean Sea, as tensions with Venezuela rise.

Addressing a campaign rally in Herstelling last evening, the incumbent leader linked the regional security situation directly to the importance of the upcoming September 1 general election.

“Today, there are more military apparatus in this region than 72 hours ago; We must be able to navigate this complex environment with leadership… to secure our country, our sovereignty, and our future.”

As such, he used the occasion to warn that Guyanese are “nine days away from writing history on the right pages or turning back the clock of development.”

According to the PPPC’s Candidate, the choice at this year’s election is not only about jobs and growth, but also about safety.

“When we elect a government, it is not only about social and economic development, it is about that government’s ability to keep our country safe and to represent us on the global stage.”

He was adamant that there exists a growing risk to the country from transnational crime and “rogue regimes,” making specific mention of Guyana’s neighbour to the west.

“Let us not be blind to the fact that Venezuela poses a threat to Guyana; Criminal networks operating out of there and anywhere else in this region pose a threat to us.”

Ali argued that in such a situation, Guyana must work with allies like the US, UK, Canada, India, and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to strengthen security.

“We have to prove ourselves as trusted partners so that we can be part of an international coalition that stands for the rule of law and democracy.”

To this end, the President also used the platform to take a swipe at the opposition APNU, reminding the crowd of the disputed 2020 elections

“How can they say they support democracy when they tried to rig an election in 2020?”

Without naming him directly, Ali also hinted at WIN party candidate Azruddin Mohamed, saying, “How can they say they oppose criminality when their very existence is built on the wealth of criminality?”

Mohamed has faced allegations of benefiting from illicit trade, which he denies.

According to the PPPC’s Presidential Candidate, Guyana’s growing international respect, including its term on the UN Security Council, demonstrates the benefits of stable leadership.

“Today, like never before, we have every block of the world supporting our sovereignty and security… The Middle East, India, the Commonwealth, the OAS, the US, Canada, UK, the Caribbean.”

To this end, he was adamant, “We must not be blind to the risks. We must align ourselves… to secure our country, our sovereignty, and our future.”
