As the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), continues on its elections campaign trail, Head of State, President Irfaan Ali, addressing a large rally in New Amsterdam, Berbice, on Monday, outlined a vision for the economic transformation of Region # 6, anchored in targeted incentives for private investors to complement an ambitious slate of public investments.
Promising as much as at zero per cent interest in addition to the continued tax reductions to increase disposable incomes, Ali was adamant, “We are going to reduce your taxes, expand your income base, bring you opportunities, create jobs and enable this community here in New Amsterdam and other communities across this region to be empowered by building wealth creation opportunities.”
“My friends, those of you who own businesses, the established businesses here, especially those hotels and so on…what is coming ahead of you is enormous opportunities with the new gas-to-shore project and the new water port facility.”
As such, he posits, “We know that you will have to upgrade your facilities. We know there will be need for new facilities. And we are going to give special tax incentive for the upgrade of those facilities. We are going to give special incentives for the development of the industrial zone, manufacturing, and agro-processing zone.”
The Presidential Candidate for the PPP/C also announced that Region Six would see a municipal airport, in addition to the new international stadium at Palmyra, a massive power plant, and the long-promised deep water port connected to northern Brazil.
These, according to the incumbent, are all intended to create “jobs, jobs, jobs” and stimulate further private sector expansion. To ensure residents are positioned to benefit, he additionally committed to expanding technical training facilities in the region so that “you can be trained right here to take up those jobs.”
According to the President, this blend of parallel public and private investment would catalyse growth across sectors, from hospitality to manufacturing, and lift household incomes.
“While they speak only about salaries, we are speaking about something much bigger… how can we expand the income base of the family? How can we get more persons in your families working?”
Additionally, he promised a direct transfer of resources to help families build, expand or rehabilitate homes, a co-investment scheme with the banking sector to reduce small business loan rates.
To this end, the President called on New Amsterdam residents to vote in large numbers. “These are not the elections in which you will stand on the sidelines. These are elections in which you will seal and secure the best possible future for Guyana, Amsterdam, and Region Six.”
According to the PPP/C hopeful, “Do not give up what you have. You stand up with what you have… You cannot betray those who invest and believe in you. Because we invested in you, we give you love, we show you embrace… this is the time to develop the second partnership.”
