January 23 2025- The Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) has officially added four new training courses to its curriculum, aiming to equip teachers with the skills needed to support children with unique academic needs.

The courses were introduced during a ceremony held at the college’s convention centre on Wednesday.

The new programs—Health and Family Life Education (HFLE), Literacy Education, Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND), and Graduate Teacher Education (GTE)—are designed to foster an inclusive learning environment that enables all students to thrive academically.

Scores of student teachers have already begun their training, which will prepare them to become certified educators capable of addressing diverse educational challenges. Minister of Education Priya Manickchand emphasized the importance of these initiatives in elevating education standards while ensuring that every child’s needs are met.

By investing in these programs, we are providing opportunities for children with learning challenges to excel, breaking down barriers and creating pathways for their success Minister Manickchand stated.

Guyana remains one of the few Caribbean nations with legislation supporting individuals with special education needs. This progressive framework has positioned the country as a regional leader in inclusive education.

The introduction of these courses reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the education sector through teacher training and targeted interventions. As Guyana continues to expand its education system, the focus remains on adapting to the evolving needs of students and fostering a more inclusive academic landscape.
