January 18, 2025 – Fisherfolk at the Three Door Koker Landing Site, West Coast Berbice (Region Five), now have access to improved facilities following the commissioning of a newly constructed wharf and shed by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha.

The project, valued at $110,031,773, aims to enhance working conditions for fisherfolk, providing a more conducive environment for their daily operations.

Speaking at the commissioning, Minister Mustapha highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting the fishing industry through the Fisheries Landing Site Enhancement Project.

He stated that since taking office, the Ministry have prioritized improving working conditions for fisherfolk. This project, launched in 2023, has seen over $300 million invested in enhancing more than 100 landing sites nationwide with washroom facilities, sheds, wharves, solar lighting, ramps, and office buildings.

He further noted that in 2024, an additional $300 million was allocated to continue the development of landing sites across Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, and Six, directly benefiting over 300 individuals.

Looking ahead, Minister Mustapha revealed that the government has earmarked $1.3 billion in 2025 to further expand and support the fisheries sub-sector, underscoring its importance to the livelihoods of many Guyanese.

The upgraded facilities at the Three Door Koker Landing Site are part of the government’s broader effort to modernize the fisheries sector and enhance the productivity and welfare of fisherfolk across the country.
