December 2, 2024 — The Ministry of Education’s Secondary Sector recently wrapped up a two-day workshop focused on enhancing the teaching of Caribbean History in secondary schools across Guyana.

The event brought together 65 teachers from all ten administrative regions, marking a significant step towards improving national performance in this essential subject.

This initiative, aimed at boosting classroom confidence and effectiveness, is part of the Ministry’s broader objective to deepen students’ understanding of regional identity and historical development.

Nationwide Representation

Educators from a wide array of schools participated in the workshop, showcasing representation from every administrative region:

  • Region 1: North West Secondary
  • Region 2: Charity, Anna Regina, and Abram Zuil Secondary Schools
  • Region 3: Essequibo Islands, Leguan, Zeeburg, Leonora, Stewartville, West Demerara, Patentia, and Westminster Secondary Schools
  • Region 4: Annandale, Covent Garden, Bladen Hall Multilateral, Diamond, Hope, Golden Grove, and President’s College
  • Region 5: Bush Lot, Mahaicony, and Bygeval Secondary Schools
  • Region 6: Skeldon Line Path, Winifred Gaskin Memorial, J.C. Chandisingh, Berbice High School, Berbice Educational Institute, and New Amsterdam Secondary Schools
  • Region 9: St. Ignatius Secondary
  • Region 10: Christianburg Wismar, New Silvercity, Linden Foundation, Wisburg Secondary, and Mackenzie High School
  • Georgetown: The Bishop’s High, Tutorial High, St. Stanislaus College, St. Rose’s High, and other prominent institutions

The workshop offered an in-depth review of the Caribbean History syllabus, identifying challenging topics and aligning lesson plans with curricular goals. Teachers engaged in creating innovative, practical strategies to simplify complex historical concepts and integrate technology into lessons, enhancing student engagement and interaction.

A significant portion of the training addressed managing School-Based Assessments (SBAs), a critical component of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) curriculum. Teachers were equipped with tools to improve the quality of student submissions, standardize marking, and deliver constructive feedback.

Group presentations allowed educators to share innovative teaching methods, fostering a spirit of collaboration and creativity.

The Ministry of Education anticipates that the workshop will have a lasting effect on the quality of Caribbean History education nationwide. By equipping teachers with the necessary skills and resources, the initiative aims to inspire students’ interest in the subject, ultimately improving academic outcomes and fostering a deeper appreciation of the Caribbean’s rich history.

This initiative highlights the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to enhancing Guyana’s education system and cultivating a generation of students who are well-versed in the history and heritage of the Caribbean.
