First Lady Expands Menstrual Hygiene Initiative to Reg One

September 20 2024 — The First Lady’s Office continues to make significant strides in promoting women’s health and hygiene through the Menstrual Hygiene Initiative.

Earlier this week, the programme was brought to the Moruca sub-district in the Barima-Waini Region (Region 1), where hundreds of young girls participated in discussions on menstrual hygiene and period poverty.

The initiative seeks to address the challenges faced by women and girls, particularly in hinterland communities, where access to menstrual products and education is limited. More than 1,100 girls from the Barima-Waini Region are receiving sanitary pads as part of the programme.

A post on the official account of First Lady Arya Ali states “Our aim is to empower young women and girls with the knowledge and practical skills they need,” noting that “By providing free sanitary products, we hope to eliminate menstruation as a barrier to education and prevent health-related issues.”

This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that girls across Guyana can continue their education uninterrupted by period poverty while promoting long-term health and well-being.
