A police intelligence-led operation in Berbice on Wednesday resulted in the arrest of a taxi driver found in possession of 257 lbs of suspected marijuana, with an estimated street value of approximately $35 million.

The operation, meticulously executed by ranks from Regional Police Division #6 and Police Headquarters, took place on the Number 45 Public Road in Berbice.

Officers intercepted a Toyota Spacio vehicle, bearing registration number HD 732, driven by a 33-year-old taxi driver from Block 19 Line Path, Corriverton, Berbice.

A comprehensive search of the vehicle led to the discovery of seven ‘salt bags’ containing a total of 53 parcels wrapped in transparent plastic, suspected to be Cannabis Sativa. The driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was taken into custody.

The seized parcels weighed 116,641 grams (257 lbs) and have an estimated street value of $34,992,383.

Investigations are ongoing.
