Tragic Collision on Moruca River Claims Lives

Mother dies as baby survives horrific crash…

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has issued a statement expressing deep regret over a tragic incident involving a collision between a Coast Guard vessel and a civilian boat on the Moruca River, Region One (Barima Waini), resulting in loss of lives earlier today.

 

According to a statement from the GDF’s preliminary investigations, the collision occurred at approximately 6;45 hours today between the Coast Guard Raiders Craft 17 (RC 17) and the civilian vessel.

 

The civilian boat was occupied by three adults and one baby, while the RC 17 was carrying personnel from the Coast Guard.

 

The operator of the civilian vessel and the baby’s mother lost their lives in the accident. They were rushed to the Charity Hospital but were pronounced dead upon arrival.

 

The Coast Guard personnel aboard the RC 17 did not sustain any injuries.

 

The Guyana Police Force has initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

 

Brigadier Omar Khan, Chief of Defence Staff, along with Officers and Ranks of the Guyana Defence Force, extend their heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragic incident. Their thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.
