Woman gives kidney to 17-Y-O as GPHC achieves another milestone

The Georgetown Public Hospital is today celebrating after it successfully conducted a Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy procedure.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the hospital said the procedure was done on Monday and noted that it represents a significant advancement in Kidney Transplant Surgery in Guyana.

“The laparoscopic donor nephrectomy was conducted on a female donor who selflessly contributed her kidney to a 17-year-old male relative. The young recipient had been grappling with chronic kidney failure attributed to type 1 diabetes” the statement noted.

According to the premier hospital, the transplanted kidney is functioning well and the patient has shown no further need for dialysis, underscoring the effectiveness of restoring renal health.

The transplant and vascular, general surgery, anesthesia, and nursing teams are all being credited with the exceptional work done at the hospital Monday, a representation of comprehensiveness and coordination.

Dr. Kishore Persaud was the lead surgeon for the groundbreaking procedure and to the GPHC statement, is enthusiastic about the positive outcome.

“This modern technique allows for precision and minimal invasiveness, promoting reduced post-operative pain, quicker recovery, minimal scarring, and lower risk of complications” Dr. Persaud is quoted as saying.

He said both the donor and recipient are recovering well and are expected to return to their daily lives soon.

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation is set to broaden its spectrum of laparoscopic services, leveraging the enhanced resources and capabilities now at its disposal, the statement noted.
