A 37-year-old labourer has been charged for the September 21 hit and run death of Triumph, East Coast Demerara resident Patrick Nicholas Mamasee.

Edward Sampson, of Lot 61 Graham’s Hall, East Coast Demerara, was charged with failing to report an accident; failing to stop after an accident and failing to render assistance to an injured person.

The cause of death by dangerous driving investigation is ongoing.

Sampson appeared in the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Alisha George.

He entered a not guilty plea and was initially placed on $200,000 bail. That was changed to $80,000 bail.

He is scheduled to return to court on October 20, 2023.

The victim, Patrick Nicholas Mamasee, 56, was found unconscious at around 22.30 hrs on Thursday, September 21, on the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Railway Embankment.

He was still unidentified when he was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he succumbed.

Police said that the accused driver, Edward Sampson, turned himself in on Thursday, September 23 at the Beterverwagting Police Station.
