Ganesh Dhanraj, the 33-year-old man who killed his common-law wife at their Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) home, was on Wednesday jailed for 10 years, and seven months.

The sentence was imposed by Demerara High Court Judge Jo Ann Barlow before whom Dhanraj, who had been indicted for the murder, opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.

The convict was represented by defence counsel Ravindra Mohabir, while the indictment against him was presented by State Counsel Latifah Elliot.

Dhanraj had been on remand for the unlawful killing since April 11,2017.

Dhanwantie Ram was strangled on April 5, 2017, by Dhanraj, who had worked as a farmer. According to reports, the 29-year-old woman, a mother of three, was found dead by her sister.

The woman reportedly suffered years of verbal and physical abuse at the hands of her partner.
