DEAD: Nigel Cush

The man who was killed in an early morning accident on Mandela Avenue on Thursday has been identified as 45-year-old Nigel Cush, a city businessman.

BIG Smith News Watch has been told that Cush operated a restaurant and Bar at the corners of Cummings and South Road in Georgetown.

It is believed that at the time of his death, Cush might have been heading home after closing off his business.

The vehicles involved were motor lorry GYY 5875 and motor car PVV 7062. The truck was driven by 44-year-old Aslom Masood of 10 Supply, Mahaica while the car was driven by Cush who resided at 4666 Roxanne Burnham Gardens.

Aslom Masood said he was heading east along the road when from a distance, he observed the traffic light at the junction at Vlissengen Road and Mandela Avenue giving eastbound traffic the go.

Masood said while proceeding as directed by the light, he observed the car driven by Cush coming out of Vlissengen Road. The car slowed down but then picked up speed in an attempt to cross the road before the truck could reach the junction on Mandela and Vlissengen, the tuck then slammed into the car. The impact caused the car to spin several times before colliding with a utility pole and then coming to a stop.

Calls were made to the police and emergency numbers which saw Emergency Medical Technologists arriving on the scene and Cush was pronounced dead.

The police have not yet reviewed the CCTV footage from the area but according to sources, an alcohol breathalyzer test was done on the driver which showed that he had no traces of alcohol in his system.
