Packaged sugar to be back on the market within two weeks- GuySuCo CEO

Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) Sasenarine Singh on Friday said packaged sugar will be back on the market within the next two weeks. “We’re guaranteeing that,” he said in a video posted on the company’s social media pages.

A week after stating that there is no sugar shortage in the country as persons are led to believe, Singh clarified that while GuySuCo has bag sugar, there is no packaged sugar. The packaged sugar sold under the brand “Demerara Gold” and others, is scarce in supermarkets across the country.

The CEO noted that packaged sugar can only be produced when the mills are grinding but this process has stopped since the end of May. “We had stocks put aside but all of it was sold out in the local market. And unfortunately, we got wind that some of our sugar is being smuggled to a foreign country via the back track so we had to take control of that because Guyanese sugar has to go to Guyanese.”

He said the Uitvlugt factory is grinding to recommence the production of packaged sugar.

GUYSUCO employs around 18,000 persons and currently the average annual production is 250,000 tonnes of sugar.
