A 47-year-old woman and her 26-year-old daughter were on Wednesday charged for beating their relative with pieces of wood.

Melanie Stewart and her daughter Tiffany Dick, both of East La Penitence, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

They both pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on January 19, 2022, at East La Penitence, Georgetown, they unlawfully and maliciously wounded Nalisa McKenzie with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause her grievous bodily harm.

Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that the parties in the matter are cousins. McKenzie was at home on the day in question, when she got into an argument with her relatives. Soon after, a scuffle ensued between them during which Stewart choked McKenzie, causing her to fall to the ground. While the woman laid on the ground, Stewart and her daughter armed themselves with pieces of wood and lashed her about the body

A report was then made to the Police station and the injured woman was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she was admitted.  Further investigations were conducted and the mother and daughter were arrested.

The Magistrate, after listening to the facts, released Stewart and her daughter on  $70,000 bail each.  The conditionality of the bail is that they stay 50 feet away from the virtual complainant and do not communicate with her.

They were both instructed to make their next court appearance on March 16, 2022.
