Scuffle lands fashion designer, customer in court

A fashion designer and one of her customers were on Wednesday charged with assaulting each other. Those charged are fashion designer 34-year-old Keisha Edwards, and 25-year-old Melissa Calder, a University of Guyana student.

It is alleged that on June 16, 2021, at Georgetown, the women unlawfully and maliciously wounded each other. They both pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to them by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts.

They were each released on $5000 bail. Their next court appearance is on August 10.

Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that Calder gave Edwards a down payment of $30,000 to make a dress for her birthday. Sometime after Edwards sent her a photo of the dress she made to her customer. However, Calder then informed her that it was not the style she asked for, and requested to be refunded $20,000.

Edwards tried to reason with the customer, telling her that she can make the necessary adjustments to the dress. On the day in question, Calder went to Edward’s studio but was told to wait outside because the place was already crowded.

A few minutes later the UG student re-entered the studio and requested to speak with Edwards. The fashion designed pushed Calder outside. In retaliation, Calder pushed her back and they thereafter ended up in a scuffle. They both received injuries about their bodies.

They reported the incident to the Police and they were both charged.
