Fire leaves Berbice family of seven homeless

The Ramoutar’s plans for a perfect old year’s night has been foiled by a fire which has destroyed their humble abode located at Lot 60 Tain Settlement, Corentyne Berbice. The couple shared their home with their five children. A fire of unknown origin swept though the two-story wooden and concrete structure destroying all of their earthly possessions.

Jagdeo Ramoutar and his wife Amanda had been living at the location for the past year. He told this publication that he was alerted to the fire by persons who passed his place of employment, “I only hear fire fire at my house and when I left to come home I see the smoke on my way but when I reach the whole place already burn down,” the man recounted.

His wife Amanda was at home with the children  but she was unable to say what may have caused the fire, “The fire started from the front room and I was sitting on the step watching the children play and I smell the smoke and go up to check and then is when I see the fire and I run to get them out the house,” the woman recalled.

The family was unable to save anything from the house. While the family is thankful for their lives, they have very little to start the new year with. The family was expected to spend the evening at the Tain Bible Church for the traditional Old Year’s night service but that those plans have since been thwarted, “Now I don’t have anywhere to go and put my family. I lost everything in the fire. What I was able to work and put in the house to make them comfortable just burn up,” Jagdeo Ramoutar said.

The family said they are uncertain about their next move.
