— Minister Croal says project to ease backlog of pending applicants

A few months before the 2025 General and Regional Elections, the Ministry of Housing announced a major housing expansion initiative in Region Six, with the acquisition of additional lands to address the growing number of pending applicants.

Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, during a visit to the area on Friday, revealed that close to 6,000 house lots have been identified across Overwinning, Glasgow, and Providence on the East Bank of Berbice.

“Infrastructure work has already started. These have all been tendered and awarded, and works have started,” Minister Croal stated. “We’re talking about an investment here of $14.8 billion. We’re doing it in lots—one section is about 14 and the other about 11—so that’s about 25 lots assigned here for various contractors to work.”

The minister explained that the access road is currently under construction as part of the initial phase of works to prepare the area for future homeowners.

He added that while not all lots have been allocated, some will be reserved for future housing initiatives.

“We still have available lots, and some of this can be reserved too for a future housing program,” Croal noted.

According to the Housing Minister, the new lots are expected to be ready by the end of May 2026, allowing beneficiaries to identify and occupy their portions of land.
