$1.5M bail for Cop accused in fatal hit-and-run

A police corporal was on Tuesday granted a total of $1.5 million bail after being charged in connection with the fatal crash that claimed the lives of two East Coast Demerara men on June 28.
Corporal Shareef Mohamed appeared before the court and was charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving in relation to the deaths of 39-year-old construction worker Collis Bristol of Nabaclis and 31-year-old horse cart operator Akeem Burges of Golden Grove.
He was granted $750,000 bail on each of the two causing death by dangerous driving charges.
Mohamed also faces charges of failing to stop after an accident, failing to render assistance, driving an uncertified motor vehicle, and failing to report an accident. He was granted $10,000 bail on each of those charges.
The charges stem from a fatal collision on the Beehive Public Road just after 11:00 p.m. on June 28.
Bristol died at the scene, while Burges succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the Enmore Regional Hospital.
According to previous reports, the two men were travelling on motorcycle CG 8393 at the time of the collision, with Bristol riding the motorcycle.
Investigators later identified Mohamed as a suspect. His vehicle, PAK 1593, was found with damage reportedly consistent with the crash, leading to his arrest and the subsequent filing of charges.
The incident sparked public outrage after the driver allegedly left the scene. Relatives of the victims had even offered a $200,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible.
