Security Guard Remanded Over Fatal Stabbing of Co-worker

A 29-year-old security officer of Nismes Public Road, West Bank Demerara, has been ordered to remain in custody following a stabbing that claimed the life of her colleague, 63-year-old Paul Devonish.
The accused, Necose Clement, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday.
Clement was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge, which alleges that she unlawfully killed Devonish on August 19, 2025, at Barrack Street, Kingston, Georgetown.
Investigators reported that Devonish’s death followed a confrontation with an 18-year-old co-worker last Friday.
The dispute began after Devonish allegedly insulted another staff member, prompting the teenager to intervene.
Devonish reportedly slapped the youth twice, sparking tensions.
The teenager later left the scene and went to the doctor’s quarters at New Market and Main Streets, where Clement was stationed with her mother, Vanessa Jones.
After being told what had happened, Jones advised the teen to remain there and said that Clement would accompany him later to collect his belongings.
While walking east along Barrack Street, Clement and the teen encountered Devonish, who was riding an electric bike.
According to police, Devonish threatened the teenager, telling him he was “lucky” his head was not “boxed off.”
Clement then stepped in, questioning why the older guard was intimidating the youth. Devonish allegedly responded by asking if she had come to “represent” the teen.
A struggle reportedly broke out between Clement and Devonish during which Clement pulled a knife from her pocket and stabbed him in the upper left thigh.
Devonish was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said Clement disposed of the weapon in the Lamaha Street trench before returning to her post to collect her belongings.
She was later arrested at the teenager’s residence. During a video-recorded interview, Clement admitted to inflicting the fatal wound.
Investigators have since taken statements from multiple witnesses. At the time of the incident, Devonish was reportedly off duty.
Clement has been remanded to prison until September 16, when the matter will be called again.
