Mother of twins killed in Mahdia dorm fire sues state for GYD $900 million

Wednesday February 19, 2025
On Monday, February 19, 2025, the state was slapped with a Nine Hundred Million by Valerie Carter, the mother of two girls who were killed in the July 03, 2023 Mahdia Dorm Fire which was set alight by another female at the dorm. Her daughters were twins.
In a statement to the media on Wednesday, the Law Office of Eusi Anderson explained that Carter had previously brought an action to set aside an agreement that she signed with the state compensating her ten million dollars in total for the death of her two daughters. In that agreement, she received five million as compensation for each child.
The statement from the lawyer’s office noted that Justice Nigel Niles, on January 13, 2025, granted a judgment that, in effect, cleared the path for the setting aside of the agreement of settlement executed between Carter and the State and declared it null, void, and of no legal effect.
“Ms. Carter in the Justice Nile Court action had alleged that she was the victim of undue pressure and influence from the state actors who subtly and overtly subdue her free will to enter into the impugned settlement agreement”- the release was quoted as saying.
According to the press statement, Ms. Carter’s daughters were among twenty students who perished in the fire and she suffered double ignominy of a paltry compensation agreement executed under disputed circumstances as well as the unbearable burden of having to bury two children.
Valerie Carter is the only parent of the Mahdia Fire Tragedy who has to date, successfully opposed the compensation agreement, set it aside, and is now looking to obtain judgment that would reflect the proper compensation for the loss suffered due to the Mahdia Dorm Fire.
The state has offered five million compensation for each child whose life was loss in the fire.
