EIGHT year old Zion Vernon Alonzo Hickerson has been quietly carving his own path to greatness as a young and upcoming sportsman

At such a tender age, Zion has already procured admiration in the local sports community.

When the names Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were mentioned, they evoked thoughts of greatness and dedication, but when Rafael Nadal’s name was spoken, there was precision and determination – qualities that Zion Vernon embodied in his own unique way.

Zion is a student at St. Gabriel’s Primary, and his academic prowess matches his athletic talents, boasting an average of 93% per term.

His parents and teachers marveled at the balanced approach he brought to everything he did. This young prodigy is multi-faceted in sports, a true embodiment of versatility.

Football is one of Zion’s great loves. He spends countless hours on the pitch, honing his skills with the renowned Vurlon Mills Football Academy.

His eyes would light up when he watches Cristiano Ronaldo weave his magic on the field or when Lionel Messi dazzled with his dribbling skills. He dreamed of emulating their greatness one day.

Football was just one facet of Zion’s sporting repertoire. He was also an adept tennis player, often taking to the pristine courts with a precision reminiscent of Rafael Nadal. His love for the game was unwavering, and it showed in his relentless training and competitive spirit.

Squash was another arena where Zion thrived.

The eight year old has already represented Guyana in various tournaments, showcasing his remarkable ability to adapt and excel across different sports disciplines. Table tennis and golf rounded out his diverse skill set, making him a true all-rounder in the making.

Zion’s journey to becoming a household name in the sports world took a significant step forward when he entered the inaugural Chatoyers Tennis Invitational. In the Boys 10 and Under category, he faced formidable competition from players hailing from seven different countries. The final match was a test of skill, determination, and mental fortitude.

Opposing him was Kittian talent Tzuriel Percival. The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both young athletes displaying exceptional prowess.

Zion demonstrated remarkable composure and adaptability, ultimately emerging victorious with a score of 2-4, 4-1, and 10-8. The crowd erupted in applause, recognizing that they were witnessing the rise of a future tennis superstar.

As news of Zion’s triumph spread across Guyana, the nation took pride in its young sports prodigy. With dedication, precision, and determination, Zion Vernon Alonzo Hickerson was well on his way to becoming a household name not only regionally but hopefully on the international stage as well. His story is a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and a well-rounded approach to life.
