Guyana recorded a 5.7 magnitude earthquake in the south of Guyana. Dr Garvin Cummings, Chief Hydro-Meteorologist Officer was able to confirm this on Sunday. “We had an earthquake originating in south Guyana, just in the area of Dadanawa, that is where the indications are right now, it was recorded on our system at magnitude 5.7 on the Richter scale and the depth was just about six miles deep, below surface,” Dr Cummings explained.

This was recorded at about 15:05. Dr Cummings when asked if Guyana has had earthquakes, said the country do not have any records of earthquakes, ” we don’t keep earthquake records, but since I have been at Hydro-Met over 20 years, I don’t think we have recorded one of these.”
Dr Cummings said he would not speculate on what could have been the cause except for what he said could be “natural earth movement.”

Tremors were felt in different parts of the country, including Region 4 where the capital, Georgetown is located.
