Mahaicony fisherman found dead in creek had returned home after confrontation with cops.

Amelio Rodrigues, the 24-year-old fisherman who was found dead in the Mahaicony Creek on April 4, was still alive and had even returned home after his confrontation with police ranks the previous day.

This is according to a statement that police reportedly received from the victim’s wife.

His brother, Carlos Rodrigues has told other sections of the media that Amelio had turned up dead a day after he was beaten by police ranks.

He claimed that they were imbibing with other fishermen on Monday, April 3, at Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, when the cops approached and began beating Amelio with batons.

Carlos Rodriges claimed that he armed himself with a cutlass to defend his brother, but the policemen then began to beat him and then placed him in the lockups at the Mahaica Police Station.

Giving their version of events, police sources said that between 11:00 am. and 12:00 pm. on Monday, April, 3, 2023, Amelio, who was armed with a knife, was behaving in a disorderly manner in front of the Mahaicony Police Station. He reportedly ignored a police rank who asked him to desist.

However, Amelio allegedly fled through an alley between the station and the Mahaicony bridge when the rank tried to apprehend him.

At around 09.00 a.m. on April 4, 2023, Amelio’s body was found in the Mahaicony Creek.

Police said that pathologist Dr Vivakenand Bridgemohan gave the cause of death as asphyxia and drowning.

Dr. Bridgemohan reportedly mentioned that he saw a small bruise on the dead man’s forehead, “which could have occurred while the victim was in the water.”

Police said the pathologist observed no other marks on the body.

According to the police, Dr. Bridgemohan also said blood that came from the victim’s mouth could be caused by water entering his lungs.

Big Smith News Watch understands that in a written statement, the dead man’s wife, Kammeal D’Oliveira, said that at around 07.00 a.m. on April 3, 2023, Amelio Rodrigues left home with his three-year-old son “for a walk on the road.”

He returned home alone after 11.00 a.m. and allegedly told her that “the police had run him,” but did not provide any details. She allegedly said she did not observe any injuries on him.

Amelio also allegedly said told her he had left his son at Central Mahaicony with his brother, Carlos Rodrigues.

Amelio allegedly then asked her to collect his son and his bicycle.

This she did, but Amelio was reportedly not at home when she returned. She allegedly said in her statement she assumed he had “gone for a walk on the road,” as he normally does.

She subsequently learned that his body was found in the creek.

Responding to Carlos Rodrigues’ allegations that he was beaten, police allege that on Monday, April 3, Raphael Peters, a construction worker from Zeskendren, Mahaicony, reported that Carlos Rodrigues, 22, of  Airy Hall, Mahaicony, “ran him with a cutlass and threatened to chop him.”

Police said that at around 5.00 p.m., a police constable arrested Carlos Rodrigues, who allegedly admitted to the allegations, and he was placed in custody.

Big Smith News watch understands that a police diary entry noted that Rodrigues had bruises to his face when he was arrested.

On Wednesday, April 5, 2023, Carlos Rodrigues was charged with threatening behavior and appeared at Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court. He is said to have told the court that he could not remember what had transpired on the day of his arrest.

He pleaded not guilty and was placed on $25, 000 cash bail.
