A 27-year-old labourer who is accused of raping an 11-year-old child was on Friday released on bail after appearing in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Stephen Gordon of West La Penitence, Georgetown, appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

Particulars of the charge stated that on December 29, 2020, at West LaPenitence, Georgetown, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under the age of 16. Gordon was granted $200,000 bail and instructed to make his next court appearance on May 5, 2021.

According to reports, on the day in question, the child was sent to the shop by her mother to purchase an item. She however did not return home until the following day. On December 30, 2020,  the girl’s mother received a phone call from a relative who informed her that she was found.

The mother then went to collect the child and questioned her about her whereabouts. It was then she told her mother that she spent the night at Gordon’s home and he raped her.

A report was made to the Police, and following investigations and advice from the chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Gordon was charged.
