Injured carjacker dies hours after shootout with police

Late on Thursday night, Andrew Newyear was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was being treated for gunshot injuries.
Newyear was among four men who robbed a taxi driver, hijacked his car and dumped him in the trunk on Thursday morning.
On Thursday morning, Newyear and Rawle Franklin were shot by the police after they opened fire on anti-crime patrols police ranks who had responded to a tip off about the robbery and carjacking.
Two other accomplices Hamza Samuels and Emmanual Hale were also arrested by the police.
In a statement to media Thursday morning, the Guyana Police Force said its swift response resulted in the rescue of Joshua Singh.
Singh was the driver of the taxi PSS 2705 when it was hijacked. Police found him locked in the trunk of the vehicle after one of the suspects who was driving it lost control, crashing the vehicle in the process.
The police had receive information stating that a white Allion with persons inside had robbed someone on Lamaha Street, Georgetown. The force quickly scrambled its response team.
Patrols then observed the car driving along the Agricola Access Road.
The Anticrime Patrol subsequently attempted to intercept the vehicle but the driver drove away.
The driver then lost control and collided with road barriers.
Anti-Crime Patrol then observed four male suspects exiting the car and fired shots at police ranks as they flee. It was then that the police returned fire.
Rawle Franklin, a known character to the police was seen lying on the northern parapet bleeding from injuries, while his accomplice, Andrew Newyear was seen lying in a yard with injuries after the exchange of gunfire subsided.
The police also recovered a 9MM pistol along with a magazine containing 3 live 9MM rounds. Rank also recovered from motorcar PSS 2705, 8 (eight) cellular phones, 1 (one) Laptop computer and a female purse.
